What is TMS?

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive, evidence-based treatment used in mental health care.

It works by stimulating specific areas of the brain involved in:

  • mood and emotional regulation
  • attention and focus
  • patterns of thought and response

TMS is cleared by Health Canada for the treatment of depression, anxiety (including OCD) and binge eating. It is widely used in clinical settings to support mental health in other areas that have emerging evidence.

When people consider TMS

People often look into TMS when:

  • therapy has helped—but hasn’t created the change they expected
  • medication hasn’t been effective or hasn’t felt like the right fit
  • they continue to feel stuck despite insight and effort
  • symptoms are affecting daily functioning, energy, or engagement

At this point, many people are not looking for more information.

They are looking for something that will actually help things shift.

What makes this different at Eckert Centre

At Eckert Centre, we don’t approach TMS as a standalone solution.

We use ExoMind™, our TMS-based approach, as part of a broader, structured model of care.

This means:

  • your care is guided by a registered psychologist
  • TMS is integrated into a clear plan—not used in isolation
  • we focus on how change happens in your daily life—not just symptom reduction

TMS supports the brain—but meaningful change happens when that support is paired with the right kind of therapy.

How ExoMind™ is different from traditional TMS

ExoMind™ is built on the same evidence-based foundation as traditional TMS—but reflects a more recent advancement in how this type of therapy is delivered.

Rather than relying on a high number of sessions over many weeks, ExoMind™ is designed to deliver stimulation more efficiently within each session and across a shorter treatment course.

This includes:

  • shorter treatment plans (often around 6 sessions, rather than 20–40)
  • more precise targeting of brain systems involved in emotion regulation, impulse control, decision making and thinking flexibility
  • adaptive stimulation that can be adjusted to the individual during treatment
  • a more comfortable and time-efficient experience

The goal is not to deliver “more” stimulation—but to engage the brain systems involved in change more effectively.

At the same time, ExoMind™ is designed to be used within outpatient psychological care, making it possible to integrate directly with therapy.

This means support at the level of the brain can be paired with the right kind of therapeutic work—so changes are not only initiated, but sustained over time.

Who often looks into TMS therapy

People often explore TMS therapy when:

  • depression or low mood isn’t lifting
  • anxiety, overthinking, or intrusive thoughts won’t settle
  • therapy isn’t creating the change they expected
  • focus, clarity, or mental energy feel different with aging
  • menopause or postpartum changes are affecting how they think and function
  • ADHD-related challenges are making follow-through hard to sustain
  • binge eating, cravings, smoking/vaping, or habits feel hard to interrupt

Evidence-informed and responsible

TMS is well established in mental health care and is cleared by Health Canada for the treatment of depression, anxiety and binge eating.

There is also growing evidence supporting its use in related areas, depending on how it is applied.

At Eckert Centre, we take an evidence-informed and clinically responsible approach—helping you understand:

  • what is well established
  • what is emerging
  • what is appropriate for your situation
