Harness your Hunter Energy- Grade 4 and up
Thomas Brown (Think Fast) developed the analogy of a “hunter brain” to describe people who have difficulty regulating their attention. Like hunters (who are either in the field tracking their prey or relaxing by the campfire), people with attention regulation challenges are either “on” (i.e. very focused and determined) or “off” (i.e. have difficulty focusing mental energy and effort). The Harness Your Hunter Energy program helps students build greater control over whether they are “on” when they need to be (e.g. when studying or completing homework). The program consists of 8 lessons, ongoing consultation with a psychologist, and regular progress reports (appropriate for students aged 9 and up). NOTE: Students are expected to
complete assignments each week as part of their training; however, this should not add to their workload. Rather, the assignments are intended to support their ability to complete already assigned academic tasks with greater ease. The lessons focus on helping students build awareness of the difference between feeling focused versus distracted. Using homework brought in by the student, the program then moves toward building skills that help students focus better and for longer periods (even when they don’t want to). Skills include:
- Scheduling and time management
- Re-focusing techniques
- Studying and memory strategies
- Specific strategies that support reading comprehension, written expression, and success in math
Because this program teaches skills required for success across the curriculum, your child will likely improve his or her academic performance in a variety of subject areas. As a parent, you may find that they seem more motivated, and because the program also teaches parents how to support their child’s ability to independently regulate attention, the program will also likely reduce the conflict that often results from parents “harping” on their children to “get back to work.”
