Worried About Your Child’s Well-Being? Play Therapy Can Help.

As a parent, it can be incredibly hard to watch your child struggle with emotions or behavior that you don’t know how to address. If you’re worried about your child’s mental health or emotional well-being, you’re not alone. At Eckert Psychology & Education Centre, we offer specialized play therapy as part of our child counselling services in Calgary to help children work through challenges in a safe, supportive environment.

What Is Play Therapy?

Play therapy taps into the natural way children communicate—through play. Instead of relying solely on words, children use games, toys, and creative activities to express their feelings, solve problems, and interact with others. This approach is especially helpful for children aged 3 to 12, but can also benefit adolescents. By engaging in play, your child can safely explore emotions and develop healthier ways to cope with stress, anxiety, trauma, and other challenges.

How Play Therapy Works

At Eckert Centre, our experienced therapists tailor play therapy sessions to meet your child’s unique needs. We use various techniques, including:

  • Expressive arts: Drawing, painting, and other creative activities allow children to express emotions they might not yet have the words for.
  • Imaginary play: By acting out real-life situations, children can practice social skills and coping strategies in a playful setting.
  • Sand tray therapy: Using miniature toys and colored sand, children tell stories that reflect their own experiences, helping them process difficult emotions.

Our therapists may take a more directive approach, actively participating in the play, or they may follow a non-directive approach, where your child leads the session while the therapist observes and gently guides. Family involvement is often encouraged to help address specific conflicts or strengthen connections.

How Can Play Therapy Help My Child?

Play therapy is designed to help children:

  • Work through internal conflicts and trauma
  • Develop new problem-solving skills
  • Build self-esteem and social skills
  • Understand and take accountability for their behavior
  • Create new solutions for challenges they face
  • Learn respect and acceptance of themselves and others

How Long Does Play Therapy Last?

Therapy sessions typically last 50 minutes and are held weekly. Most children benefit from at least 12 sessions for lasting results, though some children may experience progress sooner, while more complex challenges may take longer to resolve. Many children build a long term realtionship with their therapist, coming back every once in awhile for a check in or to deal with new challenges they may be facing. We are here for as long as you need us.
