How would you explain your style and approach to therapy when working with clients?
I support clients with a variety of presentations; commonly seen are youth experiencing anxiety, grief/loss, trauma and emotional dysregulation. Whether it is parenting support or working directly with the child, my approach is rooted in attachment and values based. As no two individuals are the same, I pull from various therapeutic modalities to ensure that the unique needs of my clients are met. I strive to create a safe space for my clients, so that they feel comfortable and secure with me making it possible to delve into the vulnerable work of exploring their internal worlds and how that translates to external behaviours. As a parent, you will see a change in what is outwardly expressed by your child by healing what is within. When working with me you will find me to be compassionate, caring, curious and invested. I genuinely have the best interest of my young clients at heart! In my sessions with children, I incorporate arts and crafts, play, books, and other expressive means of communicating that is more natural for our children. Our playroom is home to various tools that allow the child to communicate freely; some of which include our sand tray, mini figurines, puppets etc.
What is a psychoeducational assessment?
A psychoeducational assessment can identify learning challenges in students of all ages, from young children to adults.
Learning disabilities, ADHD, ASD, anxiety, or depression often stay hidden and impact a student’s performance and behaviour both in and outside of the classroom. Gifted students may find themselves under stimulated and once identified, can receive enriched programming.
A psychoeducational assessment identifies areas of strength and weakness in a student’s learning profile and provides a deeper understanding of their educational abilities. It can also identify Gifted Abilities, Learning Disabilities, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Intellectual Disabilities, reading (dyslexia), writing (dysgraphia) and mathematic (dyscalculia) challenges and other mental health issues that can interfere with learning.
We pride ourselves on providing comprehensive assessment services. Myself, and my team of experienced psychologists utilize state-of-the-art assessment tools, provide clear written reports, and ensure our clients have a positive experience during the whole process.
Our reports act as a road map for adult learners, parents and/or teachers, providing clear ideas on learning strategies, social/emotional supports, academic accommodations, and assistive technology needed to help the student thrive.
What training and expertise do I bring to your sessions?
I am a Registered Psychologist. I hold my B.A in psychology with a minor in Religious Studies which was obtained from Mount Royal University in 2017. I also hold my Master’s degree in counselling which was obtained from City University of Seattle in 2019. My practice is Theraplay and Internal Family Systems (IFS) informed, and I am a EMDR Child Specialist. Additionally, I am trained in Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT) and am a Circle of Security – Parenting Facilitator. I am currently being trained in assessment.
Outside of your therapist role, what are some ways in which you express your uniqueness as a person?
Socially, I really enjoy spending time with my family and close friends. I find joy in conversing over a delicious drink at various cafes, walking through a park and getting cozy around a fire.
Independently, I have enjoyed getting lost in a good book, or piecing together a puzzle (also enjoyable with others). I am also guilty of a little retail therapy every now and then.
My greatest inspiration is one of my nephews. He has Cystic Fibrosis and despite all his hospital stays, checkups and need to take medications, he remains so happy, full of life and love. I aspire to be able to help children keep these wonderful attributes throughout their lives despite the many adverse challenges they may endure.
