How can a psychoeducational assessment actually help?

“My child is smart, so why are they falling behind?”
“They say they don’t understand what’s happening in class, but their teacher says they’re fine.”
“Homework ends in meltdowns every night. I don’t know what to do anymore.”
“Something’s not right—but I can’t figure out what.”

If you’ve typed anything like this into Google or ChatGPT lately, you're not alone. These are real questions that parents across Calgary, Airdrie, Cochrane, and Alberta ask us every single day.

You can tell something isn’t clicking for your child. Maybe their teacher has noticed too. But the “wait and see” approach isn't working—and you’re tired of feeling like you’re guessing. That’s where a psychoeducational assessment can change everything.

What is a psychoeducational assessment?

It’s a detailed, compassionate evaluation that looks at how your child learns, thinks, remembers, focuses, and emotionally responds to challenges. Our goal? To give you real answers—and a practical plan that makes sense for your child’s unique brain.

We assess things like:

- Learning strengths and challenges
- Attention and executive functioning (e.g., ADHD)
- Memory and processing speed
- Anxiety and emotional self-regulation
- Patterns that may suggest giftedness, learning disabilities, or other neurodivergence

This is about more than a diagnosis—it’s about understanding how your child experiences the world, and how we can support them.

How do I know if my child needs one?

If you’re seeing any of the following, an assessment could be an important next step:

- Your child works hard but isn’t making progress
- They get frustrated with learning, even though you know they’re capable
- They’re forgetful, disorganized, or daydreaming in class
- They hate school, say they’re “stupid,” or feel like they don’t fit in
- You’ve tried tutoring, strategies, or supports, but nothing is helping long-term

Often, parents tell us: “I just want to know what’s going on—because right now, I don’t.”

A psychoeducational assessment helps move you from guessing to clarity.

What’s the assessment process like at Eckert Centre?

We’ve designed our assessment process to be thorough, respectful, and child-centered.

- Testing is done over 3 or more visits, with a total of 5 to 7 hours of one-on-one time with a psychologist. We pace it based on what works best for your child’s attention, stamina, and comfort.
- Before testing begins, we meet with you to understand your concerns and gather important background information.
- After testing, we create a comprehensive report AND a unique, shareable PowerPoint. This summary is strengths-based and easy to understand—perfect for sharing with teachers, support staff, or family members who want to support your child well.
- You’ll also have a feedback session where we walk through everything together and answer all your questions.

What makes your assessments different from others in Calgary?

We don’t just “check the boxes.” We dig deeper, because that’s what your child deserves.
Our assessments are:

- Comprehensive – We evaluate cognitive, academic, and emotional functioning together
- Visual and Practical – Our PowerPoint summaries are designed for real-world use
- Trauma-informed & neurodiversity-affirming – We honour your child’s story and needs
- Accepted by schools and post-secondary institutions across Alberta

And most importantly, our reports give you a roadmap. Not a pile of jargon.

Can I use my benefits?

Yes. We provide emailed receipts for easy insurance submissions. Many of our clients use their extended health benefits to cover part or all of the cost.
